Sitting With My Thoughts is an expressive ceramic sculpture by British artist Kirsty Coleman, capturing a wonderfully contemplative chimpanzee in a moment of quiet reflection.

Known predominantly for her distinctive sculptural studies of the human head and face, Kirsty explores something a little different with this piece. Yet the qualities that make her figurative work so recognisable remain, expression, character and an ability to suggest an inner world through the smallest details.

Seated with its arms loosely resting across its body, the chimp has an almost unmistakably human quality. The thoughtful expression and relaxed posture give the sculpture a wonderful sense of personality, while Kirsty’s deliberately tactile approach to the ceramic surface leaves the marks of the making visible throughout.

Layers of earthy charcoal, stone and softly weathered tones accentuate the deeply textured surface, highlighting the contours of the face and body and giving the piece an almost aged, archaeological quality.

An unusual addition to Kirsty Coleman’s body of work and a wonderfully characterful example of her expressive approach to sculpture.
