Chimneys and Cobblestones by Roderick Thackray is an original oil painting that brings together northern industrial architecture, working streets and surrounding hills into a single imagined place. Cobblestones roads lead the eye between mills and factories, their chimneys rising against a landscape shaped as much by labour as by geography. 

Now in his eighties, Thackray is a self taught artist whose work is grounded in lived experience. Having spent much of his life connected to mills and industry, including once part owning a mine, he paints these environments from understanding rather than observation alone. As with his other large works, the town here does not represent a specific location but a composite built from memory, imagination and decades of familiarity with northern working life.
